Top Sights in Tanzania

Arrive to Arusha where you will meet other trip participants and begin your Wildlife & Wilderness Medium Camping Safari with a short briefing. TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK Tarangire is Tanzania's third largest national park and sanctuary for an unusually large elephant population. Majestic baobab trees are an interesting feature of the park, dwarfing the animals that feed beneath them. Animals concentrate along the Tarangire River, which provides the only permanent water supply in the area. There is a great diversity of wildlife including lion, leopard, cheetah, and up to six thousand elephant. A bush walk and a cultural visit with the semi-nomadic tribes are also included.

Day 3

Enjoy a full day of game viewing activities at Oliver's Camp.

Oliver’s Camp is situated in the remote south-eastern reaches of the Tarangire National Park. This relatively undeveloped park – celebrated by safari travellers looking to head a little off the beaten track – offers a welcome respite from the crowds of the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater to the north. Oliver’s is perfectly situated to ensure a year-round Tanzania safari experience as each passing season paints Tarangire in vibrant new colors.

Morning, afternoon and night game drives are done within the park. Walking safaris are a specialty of Oliver's Camp. The privilege of walking in these natural areas gives you an exhilarating feeling of adventure. Although you'll usually get close to large mammals such as elephant, giraffe, buffalo or even lion, walking safaris are very safe. Guests can also book a fly camping experience which is typically booked as part of a walking safari or as an exclusive and private night away from the main camp. This small and intimate lightweight camp is a fantastic experience for those seeking something a little more adventurous (additional cost).

Tarangire boasts large herds of elephant and buffalo, plus a large concentration of big cats and arguably the best bird diversity in East Africa with more than 500 species. But there’s more to Tarangire than the game and birds. This rugged landscape offers a unique safari backdrop that transforms from rolling grasslands and vibrant swamps to forests of enigmatic baobab trees; according to legend, planted ‘upside down’ for growing too tall and proud.

Day 5

Enjoy two full days of game viewing activities at Dunia Camp. Pitched on a major wildebeest migration corridor in the Central Serengeti, Dunia Camp offers easy access to the scenic Moru Kopjes and superb sightings of the big cats, leopard and rhino that roam the forests on the fringes of the Seronera River.

Game drives are offered twice a day from Dunia, allowing you to explore the hidden corners of the central and southern Serengeti with an expert guide. Dunia utilizes both open vehicles (with canvas roof and canvas sides that can be rolled down if it rains) and closed vehicles (with closed sides but windows and roof hatches that allow you to stand). Rain ponchos and Maasai shuka blankets are available to keep you comfortable if it is wet or cold.

Pitched on an age old migration route, the camp is surrounded by golden grass plains that host the Great Migration. Twice a year, in May/June and November/December, hundreds and thousands of wildebeest and accompanying zebra, topi and gazelle pass virtually through the camp on their great trek through the Serengeti in search of fresh grass. Relax on your veranda and simply watch as the Great Migration comes to you.

Hot air balloon safaris can be booked at an additional cost. This is a romantic and evocative way to experience the wilderness of East Africa. Nothing can beat the feeling of gliding silently over the game-filled plains on a balloon safari, as the early-morning sun rises over the horizon.

Day 8

Enjoy a full day game drive in the Ngorongoro Crater.

The Highlands is set at the edge of the mountain forest hugging the Olmoti Volcano to the North of the Ngorongoro Crater. A highlight awaits you this morning as you depart to explore what is commonly referred to as the World’s largest wildlife zoo. After breakfast, you descend with a picnic lunch through the early morning mists and 2,000 feet into the crater. Ngorongoro Crater is the World’s largest intact volcanic caldera. Due to its size and diversity, the crater floor is comprised of several distinct areas, ranging from forest, swamps, lakes and springs, to open grassland and some sandy dunes. It’s an awesome wildlife experience. A picnic lunch is served overlooking a small lake populated with hippos. You return to the lodge in the late afternoon.
